Great insights as always. I was flummoxed that The Guardian ran a story on this study which, once again, used just the press release quotes and did not provide really any analysis outside two sentences at the end. Carn.

This is a fantastic discussion. What matters more than anything is whether you're sedentary with metabolic syndrome or sedentary with a good metabolic system. And whether you're sedentary without any activity whatsoever throughout the day, or you at least get some movement at the end or beginning of your day. Finally, are you sedentary + super stressed or are you leisurely sitting and reading a book and having lovely discussions with your friends?

Great article! With obesity on the rise, this is a topic that should be taken seriously!

Thank you! I’ve long had many questions about these.. err.. sitting studies.. one I recall said even if you got an hour of good exercise then sat for an extended period (forget what) the exercise did NOT make up for the sitting.. So is it about sitting (vs laying down) or just being sedentary for an extended period? How much activity and how often would be needed to offset time seated? I run enough that sitting for extended periods is actually uncomfortable… I guess that’s a good thing? 😜
